Diversity Forum 2012
Museums & Galleries – changing faces, changing ways
Date: Monday 20 August
Time: 11.00am to 12.30pm
Venue: Auckland Art Gallery
Museum practitioners and professionals were invited to join in a discussion of how the changing face of Auckland – and Aotearoa – requires us to change our ways of working and enables us to develop deeper and more meaningful engagement in our communities.
A facilitated 90-minute session brought together panellists and audience of around 45 people from a wide range of organisations to focus on Auckland, its demographics, and the diversity issues that arise for museums and galleries.

The annual New Zealand Diversity Awards were presented at a ceremony in Auckland on 20 August. Congratulations to the team at Museum of Wellington City & Sea who deservedly received an award for Death & Diversity, an exhibition prorgamme that addressed the many and varied ways in which different cultures approach death.

Museums in a changing world: new challenges, new inspiration
Museums, art galleries and related organisations around the world join in International Museum Day on 18 May, now celebrated for 35 years.
Today, the world is changing faster than ever. New technology delivers new ideas, gigabytes of information, news of an increasingly unstable climate, all shared by social media. Modern museums must compete for an audible voice against the furious pace of this background. Museums in a Changing World is recognition that institutions are faced with interpreting, and existing in, a field that is becoming increasingly fluid. Each may face a unique set of goals, interests and audiences.

Diversity Forum 2011
Museums Aotearoa and many member museums and galleries participate in the Diversity Action Programme lead by the Human Rights Commission. This programme brings together organisations taking practical initiatives to: recognise and celebrate the cultural diversity of our society; promote the equal enjoyment by everyone of their civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights; foster harmonious relations between diverse peoples; and give effect to the Treaty of Waitangi.
Diversity in practice: focus on youth

The 2011 Museums and Galleries Forum, part of the Human Rights Commission's annual Diversity Forum, focussed on youth. Presenters and participants shared ideas and experience of stimulating youth engagement in museum practice.
- What surprises and new energy can be generated through strategies such as 'community curation', where diverse groups are not merely invited to participate in a museum-generated programme, but empowered to create their own museum project?
- What happens when the institution hands over control, and how does that benefit everyone involved?
The forum was seeded by several short presentations of recent projects, and everyone had an opportunity to challenge and test ideas in an informal workshop environment.
Speakers: Moana Davey, Waikato Museum (Ngaa Pou Whenua); Sarah Morris, Te Papa (The Mixing Room); Ruth Harvey, Puke Ariki (USA case studies); Tarisi Vunidilo, Pacific Islands Museums Association (Pasifika Festival education programme).

Annabel Westman Public Lectures - April 2011
We were delighted to host a series of illustrated public talks by Annabel Westman, one of our international speakers for the MA11 conference. Annabel shared her enthusiasm and expertise in historic textiles with audiences in Auckland, Wellington and Nelson. Click here to download the flyer.
Scholarships and Awards
We celebrate achievements in New Zealand's museums and art galleries in the annual NZ Museum Awards programme.
Museums Aotearoa facilitates scholarships and awards on behalf of the following benefactors.
Asia NZ Foundation Museums Award
An award to support collaborative New Zealand museum / art gallery projects with Asia with the objective of developing increased awareness greater understanding and professional networks between Asian and New Zealand cultural institutions.
The Clark Collection / Creative NZ Scholarship
An annual scholarship for New Zealand professionals in the built heritage and decorative arts field to expand their knowledge through attending the prestigious Attingham Trust Summer School in England. The scholarship also offers the recipients a number of short internships with organisations such as English Heritage, The National Trust, The Victoria & Albert Museum and The Royal Collection. Applications for 2008 have now closed.
The Mina McKenzie Scholarship
A fund established in memory of the late Mina Mckenzie provides assistance to enable museum workers to undertake education, training or development that will directly benefit their museum career.

Diversity Forum - 23-24 August 2009
The 2009 Human Rights Commission Diversity Forum was held at Te Papa.
On Monday 24 August, Museums Aotearoa supported a forum for museums and galleries hosted by Te Papa and Wellington Museums Trust, in which David Fleming, Director of National Museums Liverpool, spoke about the proposed Federation of International Human Rights Museums.
