Frances Kāhui Martin - Tūhoe, Te Whānau ā
Āpanui, Ngāti Kuri – is a full-time PhD student in Te Ara Poutama,
Faculty of Māori Development, Auckland University of Technology (AUT).
Her thesis for her Masters of International Hospitality Management was
entitled, ‘Te manaakitanga i roto i ngā ahumahi tāpoi- The
interpretation of manaakitanga from a Māori tourism supplier
perspective’. Her doctoral research examines the internal dynamics of a
rural Māori community during the 1950s, focusing on the protection of
mātauranga Māori and tikanga Māori in the face of Pākeha/western
practices and influences infiltrating the region.
Frances Martin attended a special conference on ‘Preserving Māori culture and built heritage: emerging tribal cultural centres’ in Rotorua in March, 2008. Here she shares her impressions of this event.
