ICOM Members are invited to attend the Annual Meeting, which will be a working breakfast on Wednesday 23 May, 7.45-8.45am, at CoCA Toi Moeraki Centre of Contemporary Art, 66 Gloucester St.
The ICOM Aotearoa New Zealand Steering Committee has been working on a draft set of Rules with the goal to register as an Incorporated Society. Information about the Draft Rules has been circulated to members. The next steps are on the agenda for the Annual Meeting.
In addition, we are hosting two roundtable sessions for ICOM ANZ members as part of a series being conducted on behalf of ICOM in a process revisiting the ICOM definition of museums approved in 2007. The sessions are Monday 23 April in Auckland and Sunday 20 May in Christchurch.
This ICOM project is led from ICOM Headquarters in Paris by Dr Jette Sandahl who is familiar with the New Zealand museum scene from her time as Director of Experience at Te Papa. Jette chairs the ICOM Museum Definition, Prospects and Potentials Committee, and is very keen for New Zealanders to contribute their unique perspectives.

ICOM members met for breakfast in Palmerston North on Tuesday 23 May, during the MA17 conference. The Steering Committee going forward comprises: Jane Legget (Chair), Liz Cotton, Victoria Esson, Alice Tyler, Alba Letts and Phillipa Tocker. The Committee is working on establishing ICOM Aotearoa New Zealand as an Incorporated Society. Museums Aoteaora continues to provide secretariat services.
The next general meeting for ICOM Aotearoa new Zealand members will be in Christchurch in May 2018, to coincide with the MA18 conference.

Current Developments - ICOM NZ
ICOM NZ is operating through a Steering Committee at present, comprising Jane Legget (Chair), Courtney Johnson (Deputy Chair), Victoria Esson (Treasurer) and Ian Griffin, with Phillipa Tocker, Executive Director of Museums Aotearoa, co-opted to provide advice from Museums Aotearoa's experience. We'll be working out our strategic direction. Our priority is to produce an up-to-date constitution with the aim of bringing it before a meeting of the membership to be held during the Museums Aotearoa's Annual Conference in Palmerston North, 22-24 May 2017.
Museums Aotearoa has generously taken on the task of managing ICOM NZ membership subscriptions, and has offered to serve as interim secretariat. Furthermore, MA has been very helpful in the process of changing our bank arrangements. Thank you, Phillipa and Talei! We also would like to thank Te Papa for managing ICOM NZ's accounts for the past few years.
ICOM Triennial Conference Milano, July 2016
Nearly 3,500 international museum professionals attended the ICOM Triennial Conference in Milan. This is the main gathering of ICOM members and includes the formal meetings where changes to its constitution are discussed, reports on activities from the previous three years are received and future priorities outlined. The overarching theme for 2016 was Museums and Cultural Landscapes. International keynote speakers, including artist Christo and Nobel Prize winner Orhan Pamuk, author of The Museum of Innocence, addressed the whole conference. Then members participated in three days of sessions of the International Committees relating to their specific interests or museum roles, along with many additional parallel events, professional meetings and site visits. In addition to a lively social programme, hosted at some of Milan's marvellous museums, galleries and historic buildings, there were plenty of great opportunities to mix with museum people from all corners of the world - 129 countries this time. The next ICOM Triennial Conference will be hosted by Kyoto in September, 2019. That means members have three years in which to save up! The theme is: Museums as Cultural Hubs: The Future of Tradition.
