He angitūtanga: The opportunity 

Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki is New Zealand’s most inspiring visual arts experience. Home to one of the world’s largest collections of New Zealand art, the Gallery presents exhibitions across four floors of its iconic building located right in the heart of the city. Aiming to engage and excite broad audiences from within the city, across the country and around the world, the Gallery offers a rich programme of exhibitions, as well as special events for the whole whānau, activities for schools, a licensed café and a design store.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Communications Officer to join the Gallery’s Marketing & Communications team. Reporting to the Gallery’s Senior Manager of Marketing & Communications, your key purpose is to manage the Gallery’s publicity and internal / external communications activities, including the effective communication of the exhibition programme and special events, alongside a wide range of other Gallery news.

He kōrero mōu: About you

You’re a passionate and skilled communications professional with at least three years’ experience of delivering positive, proactive and creative communications campaigns. You are likely to hold a qualification in communications or to have strong experience in a similar role. You will have high attention to detail and a desire to produce quality, best-in-class communications. Your relationship-building skills will be excellent.

Applicants will demonstrate the following attributes:

  • Minimum of three years’ experience in publicity, public relations, communications or journalism preferred.
  • Experience in use of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook).
  • A high level of written, oral, interviewing and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated good media relations and a well-developed network of contacts across traditional and social media.
  • The ability to work autonomously, but with high levels of communication with other relevant team members.
  • An ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
  • A proactive approach to developing the Gallery’s positive public profile.
  • A meticulous approach to detail.
  • An understanding of and commitment to the principles of Treaty of Waitangi and biculturalism as they relate to the Gallery and its activities

As we recalibrate the ways we connect with audiences in light of COVID-19, this is a time for fresh thinking and innovation. We believe the arts have an important contribution to make to community health and wellbeing. This position is in the Gallery’s dynamic Marketing & Communications team where you will work alongside a Senior Graphic Designer, Junior Graphic Designer, Digital Marketing Officer and Marketing Coordinator.

The role is fixed-term until December 2021, working 40 hours a week with flexibility around start and finish times.

Note: The Gallery is a seven-day operation, and this position does have a requirement on occasion to work  evenings, weekends, public holidays and after hours as required.
