Ancestral footprints do not last forever. They are effaced as by the incoming tide. It is then our turn to leave footprints for others to follow.

Wairau Māori Art Gallery is set to open to the public on 19 February this year. We are looking for an exceptional individual with a strong grounding in Te Ao Māori and toi Māori to lead this unique organisation.

Located inside the soon to be opened Hundertwasser Art Centre in Whangārei, Wairau Māori Art Gallery will be the first independent public art gallery dedicated to exhibiting and supporting contemporary toi Māori. Our purpose is to elevate Māori art, artists and curators as a pou of our national identity by presenting contemporary indigenous practice that is aspirational and inspiring.

Working alongside the Hundertwasser Art Centre team you will oversee all operational aspects of the gallery including planning and delivery of the exhibition programme, administration, budget management, visitor experience, volunteer coordination and public engagement.

You will be the public face of the gallery and will need to have experience across a broad range of activities including community and audience development, communications, and public programme development and delivery. You will have strong existing networks with an understanding of how to bring people with you.

You will report directly to the Wairau Māori Art Gallery Trust working with a kaitiaki board member.

You will be responsible for supporting, coordinating and working closely with guest curators, artists, contractors and other professionals.

Wherever possible Wairau Māori Art Gallery encourages and enables a tuākana/tēina approach and the sharing of mātauranga to build capability for emerging professionals within our Māori communities.

If you feel this is the role for you then please submit a full CV and an attached cover letter that clearly outlines why you would like to be part of Wairau Māori Art Gallery. Include at least two referees that you are happy for us to contact. The salary range is $70,000K - $80,000K annually.

Applications close 5pm Sunday 6 February 2022.
