Museum Director

The Hokitika Museum is looking for an exceptional individual to take up the role of Museum Director.

Full time, permanent position

The Hokitika Museum is located in the heart of Te Tai Poutini - West Coast, the largest region in Aotearoa – New Zealand. What began in 1869, in the new Town Hall, as the “Museum Room” grew into the West Coast’s largest museum and archive.

The Hokitika Museum’s vision is to develop programmes and services that highlight the many cultural identities and stories across the West Coast. The West Coast’s extreme geography and inspiring people heavily contribute to the Museum’s unique sense of place in the world.

The focus of this role will be on creating a strong presence for the Museum, developing inspirational exhibitions and programmes, growing membership, fundraising and building on-going engagement with ngā Kākano (youth) and community groups in Westland and within the wider Te Tai Poutini – West Coast region.

You will be leading a diverse museum and research centre team, overseeing operational aspects of the Museum including planning and delivery of the Ngā Whakatūranga – Public Galleries Redevelopment Project, collection readiness programme, Te Whata Nui Project and public engagement.

You will be the public face of the Museum and will need to have experience across a broad range of activities including community and audience development, communications, public programme development and delivery. You will have strong existing networks with an understanding of how to engage and inspire a team. 

To be successful in this position you will have a degree or other relevant qualification in Museum Studies or History, management experience and a minimum of four years’ experience in a similar or related role.
