Silver Stream Railway was formed in 1967 by a group of people interested in preserving our nations railway history. Over the years the railway has grown to be the home to 10 steam and 3 diesel locomotives along with 2 diesel railcars and a wide selection of heritage passenger carriages and goods wagons. Our 1.5 kms track was relayed by society volunteers on the formation of the original Wellington to Upper Hutt railway that was closed in 1953 when the railway was duplicated on a new alignment. All of the people you see running the train are volunteers who along with other members do everything; from track and rolling stock restoration to maintaining the grounds, to keep our railway history alive.
