The Buried Village is one of NZs original visitor attractions. It was established in 1931 and continues today to show case the destruction caused by the eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886.

The Museum is full of thought provoking stories, images and excavated objects that show what life was like in the village before and during the eruption.

The excavated site displays clearly show how Maori and early settlers lived their lives together and where tourism in NZ was born.
