Chatham Islands Firsts:

• The Chatham Islands are the only area of New Zealand to ever suffer foreign naval bombardment
• The Chatham Islands was the ‘Potato Capital of the South Pacific’ during whaling days
• 244 American whale ships called at the Chatham Islands between 1835 and 1888
• Several Chatham Islanders were taken prisoner by the Germans during WWII when the freighter, Holmwood, was torpedoed and sunk
• The Chatham Islands are the only part of New Zealand to lose a member of the community to a tsunami
• Chatham Island Jockey Club is the second earliest registered racing club in New Zealand (after Auckland)
• The Chatham Islands was the first area of New Zealand to have a telephone exchange
• The Chatham Islands have one of only two prehistoric shark burial grounds in the world at Te Whanga Lagoon (the other being in South America)
