MA Briefing to Incoming Ministers 2023

MA has produced a Briefing to Incoming Ministers (BIM) for the upcoming general election.

The BIM provides an introduction to each portfolio and summarise key areas of policy and policy issues.

The Museums Aotearoa BIM is all about sustainable funding for our museums and galleries. See excerpt here;

Our members face an unprecedented funding crisis. Most museums and galleries are funded through a mixture of local government funding, sponsorship, sales through retail, cafes and venue hire and entrance fees. Aside from Te Papa, no museums and galleries receive sustainable funding from Central Government (though a number have received small, time-limited grants and a contribution to their educational programme via a contestable, time bound contract).

The funding shortfall means there is a real risk that many of our members may not survive. We ask you to direct your officials to work with us urgently to scope the size of the shortfall and design a sustainable funding model.
